Keywords: economy, sustainability, balance, diagnostic methods, economic system, systematic approach
To achieve sustainable development of the society, it is necessary to develop the methods determining the directions of transforming national and regional economies. The formation of such methods is relevant at the present stage of the economic development. In this regard, the search for adequate methods and the choice of key indicators that fully characterize the signs and size of sustainable development are required and they are of scientific and practical interest. The purpose of the paper is to study and substantiate the categories of stability and balance as the main characteristics of the sustainable development of regional economic systems. Materials and methods. The information base of the study was the scientific theories and findings of scientists on sustainable development and its assessment. General scientific methods of cognition were applied: comparison, abstraction, synthesis, induction and deduction, as well as modeling. Results of the study. The system of regional (national) economy was built in order to study sustainable development according to the UN concept and models that characterize the two sides of sustainable development: sustainability and balance. The relationship between sustainable development and balance was identified, which made it possible to determine the characteristics of sustainability and balance, as a cumulative property of sustainable development, according to the UN concept. Findings. The balance of the economy generates its stability, and stability is a consequence of balance. To assess the sustainable development of the society and the economy, it is necessary to study the mutual influence and the aggregate state of stability and balance of the economy at any of the levels under consideration.
